WHO Experts on Covid-19 Vaccines To Meet Next Week To Take Final Decision on Emergency Use Listing of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin


New Delhi: The World Health Organization on Tuesday said that the WHO and an independent group of experts will meet next week to assess the risk/benefit of the Covaxin vaccine. The organization said a final decision would also be taken on whether to provide an emergency use list to Covaxin. Developed by Bharat Biotech in partnership with the National Institute of Virology and ICMR, Covaxin demonstrated an efficacy of around 78 percent in clinical trials. Bharat Biotech is submitting data to WHO on an ongoing basis and has submitted additional information on 27 September at the request of the organization. According to reports, WHO experts are currently reviewing the information and if it addresses all the questions raised, WHO’s assessment will be finalized next week. . The World Health Organization said, “The emergency use listing process – carried out by WHO and a technical advisory group of independent experts – focuses on determining whether a manufactured product (such as a vaccine) is quality-assured, safe and effective.”
