Procurement of Kharif Crops to Start From Tomorrow in Haryana, Punjab: Centre Amid Farmers’ Protests


CHANDIGARH: On a day when farmers’ protests in Haryana turned violent and police used force against protesters, the central government on Saturday said that procurement of kharif crops would begin in Haryana as well as Punjab from Sunday, October 3. Addressing a press conference, Haryana CM ML Khattar said that he met Ashwini Choubey and said that due to delay in monsoon, the Center has decided to start procurement of paddy and bajra from October 1 to October 11 this year. was postponed. However, he added that there is a demand to start soon and the procurement will start from tomorrow. The statement from the Haryana government and the Center came after farmers held protests across Punjab and Haryana to express concern over the delay in procurement of paddy.

Earlier in the day, protesters broke police barricades in Yamunanagar as they demonstrated near the residence of Minister of State Kanwar Pal over delay in paddy procurement.

Earlier, farmers gathered outside the residence of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in Karnal, raising slogans and waving flags against the Centre’s agricultural laws. The police used water cannons against them to disperse the crowd.

Significantly, in Punjab and Haryana, farmers had protested at many places against the suspension of paddy procurement.

The United Kisan Morcha had on Friday called for protests outside the residences of legislators in both the states to register their protest over the delay in paddy crop procurement.

The Center on Thursday postponed the procurement of kharif paddy in Punjab and Haryana till October 11 as there is a delay in the maturity of the crop and the moisture content in the fresh arrivals is more than the permissible limits due to the recent heavy rains.

The procurement operations are carried out by the Food Corporation of India (FCI), the nodal agency of the central government, along with the state agencies. The procurement of paddy usually starts from October 1.
