How Zee’s ‘Banegi Apni Baat’ was way ahead of its time
This hit show was definitely different from the rest for touching on many unconventional themes at that time.
The iconic series was considered too bold for its time and covered topics like heartbreak, flirtation, romance, campus life, ragging and even kissing scenes. Furthermore, it also openly discussed premarital sex – concepts that were completely unorthodox to portray on screen at the time. Well, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that we as audiences and actors were more open and candid than we are today!
How it paved the way for big actors in the industry
The cult show gave many actors a noticeable break. It boosted the careers of actors such as R Madhavan, Irrfan Khan, Firdous Dadi, Saadia Siddiqui, Anita Kanwal, Divya Seth, Achint Kaur, Varun Badola and Rakhi Tandon.
According to Hindustan Times, the producer of the series Diya Singh said that they were hesitant to cast the late actor Irrfan Khan at first, but their doubts were cleared after the audition. Diya also missed the casting of Maddy and revealed that she waited all day for the audition as she was busy shooting non-stop on the sets since lunch and the busy schedule made her forget about her audition. At the end of the day when he finally auditioned her, everyone loved her and she played the role of ‘Ashley’.
the show deserves to be re-aired
The show certainly deserves a re-airing for its clear narrative of issues that were considered poignant then but would be considered more relevant in today’s times. It played a really important role in making people aware of the complexities of adolescents and how important it was to address them with an open mind.
If you haven’t watched it yet, the good news is that you can now stream it on Zee5. What are you waiting for then? Watch it with your family on the weekend!
