“When a CM loses the confidence of the MLAs, he should resign from the post. 78 out of 79 MLAs had written that the CM should be changed. If we did not change the CM it would have been termed as dictatorship,” Surjewala said.

It is to be noted that Captain Amarinder Singh quit as Chief Minister after a month-long power struggle with Navjot Singh Sidhu accusing the top Congress leadership of “humiliating” him.

However, after resigning as the Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh told reporters that he was free to explore other options.

Amarinder Singh was replaced by Charanjit Singh Channi after the Congress elected him as the new legislature party leader last month.

Congress general secretary Surjewala said when a chief minister loses the confidence of all his MLAs, he should not continue in his post.

Notably, Amarinder Singh had earlier dismissed the Congress leadership’s allegation that he had lost the confidence of the MLAs.

The former chief minister had said that he would quit the Congress, to which he insisted that senior leaders were being ignored.
