Kevin Pietersen, former England cricket team batter, has made a bold prediction about the future of exhibition games. The retired player believes that the next generation has no interest in watching the longest form of cricket. As a result, Test cricket could be extinct within five to 10 years.

Test cricket is the purest form of the sport. While some cricket pundits have regularly noted that the format is losing interest, fans have shown more interest in Test series such as India vs Australia, India vs England and England vs Australia than some other bilateral white-ball series.

Interest in Test matches from other countries has decreased significantly with none of the TV channels in India showing any interest in getting the rights to the Test series from some countries. Pietersen shared his thoughts on the future of Test cricket on Twitter today:

“And actually this may all be wasted conversation because I hate to say it, tests may not be there in 5/10 years. The next generation has NO INTEREST! And this is a terrible tweet!”

Kevin Pietersen Responded to a Fan Who Said ODIs May Be Extinct

Fans had mixed reactions to Kevin Pietersen’s tweet. Some of them believed that, while Test cricket will remain, the number of ODI matches could drop to zero. A fan replied: “I hope the tests continue… at least in a smaller number. I think ODIs will become extinct.”

Pietersen replied: “I hope Tests will survive, but children are not interested. We purists love it and always will, but the next generation won’t.”

It will be interesting to see how the sport of cricket changes over the next five to ten years. Test Cricket still generates a good viewership, therefore some Test rivalries may not end for the foreseeable future.
