Former England captain Nasser Hussain has very important advice for newly appointed English test captain Ben Stokes, who will take charge of the English test team from next summer.
After Joe Root resigned, ECB decided to name the next man in line to captain the squad rather than go for a surprise pick, and with the next man, Stokes ready to take on the responsibility too, to rounding out the next captain turned out to be not such a big task for new director Rob Key.
But Nasser Hussain doesn’t want Stokes to captain the team like Joe Root
did. According to Nasser, under Root’s captaincy, on many occasions it seemed like he was getting too much advice from the senior players on the ground. When that happens to a captain, the captain can’t develop his own gut feeling because he is fed with so much information.
Nasser Hussain thinks Ben Stokes should make decisions based on his gut feeling
Nasser Hussain believes that Ben Stokes should not take this “captain by commission” approach, which basically means considering the views of three or four players and then making decisions. Nasser wants Stokes to be his own man and make his own decisions based on his gut feeling, rather than on the information of others.
Nasser spoke as an pundit on Sky Sports where he has a permanent presence and he also suggested Stokes be honest with England think tank about his body and how he feels after each test series as he is an all-rounder and now captain of the test team, his workload will be enormous and his body will have to be taken care of.
In Nasser Hussain’s view there is no need for Stokes to overcomplete himself in every test match unless it is desperately needed from now on.
