The 59th match of the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League was a low-scoring encounter, where defending champions Chennai Super Kings suffered a five-wicket defeat at the hands of five-time champions Mumbai Indians. MI skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to field first. MI threw out CSK for only 97 runs. Harsha Bhogle tweeted during the Mumbai Indians innings.

Daniel Sams, Jasprit Bumrah and Riley Meredith were on fire at Wankhede Stadium as they brought the Chennai Super Kings back to 39/6. It looked like CSK would struggle to top the 75-run, but MS Dhoni’s unbeaten 36-run knockout saw the Chennai Super Kings finish with a total of 97 runs on the board.

Chasing a small goal of 98 runs, the Mumbai Indians had fallen back to 36/4 in the power playovers. Mukesh Choudhary took three wickets, while Simarjeet Singh sacked MI captain Rohit Sharma as the Mumbai Indians struggled a bit before young players Tilak Verma, Tim David and Hrithik Shokeen led them home.

Commenting on the Mumbai Indians team’s batting performance in the power playovers, Harsha Bhogle wrote during the innings:

“There is still a lot of life in this game. Mukesh Choudhary and Simranjeet were excellent. But the #MI batting order and approach were a bit mind boggling. †

He will soon be an all-format player for India: Rohit Sharma praises Mumbai Indians teammate Tilak Verma

As mentioned before, Mumbai Indians lost four early wickets and suddenly the run chase got a bit tricky. Tilak Verma then saved the day for his team with a 32-ball 34*. He hit four fours in his match-winning knockout. Commenting on Verma’s performance during the post-match presentation, Captain Rohit Sharma said:

“He’s been brilliant. Playing the first year, having such a calm mind is great. He will soon be an all-format player for India. He has the technique and the temperament.”
